ImageMillenials have entered the workforce spanning from high school graduates to professionals with post graduate degrees. They are working alongside Gen-Xers and Baby Boomers and are disrupting the workflow as it was previously understood. The idea of working long hours and weekends are not appealing to this generation, nor are they inclined to do so as did former generations. This generation look for work-life balance, flexible schedules, and more plugged in and engaged management. In order to cater to the demands of the Millenials, managers must change how they view managing employees. They must understand that their way of managing generations prior does not work well with this group. Three quick tips on managing this generation:

  1. Engagement! Millenials thrive when they are engaged by their management team. Two-way communication is pertinent in this relationship.
  2. Work-life balance. This term has been around for ages, but takes on a new meaning with the Millenial generation. This is of great importance to the Millenial generation because it ensures that they are able to live life the way they have envisioned while still being an asset to their company. Millenials do not like the idea of companies cutting into their personal time after hours. Millenials will be great workers if companies and management understood how to utilize them during the workday.
  3. Philanthropy. The Millenial generation is plugged in to what is happening around the world and is very passionate about helping others that cannot help themselves. Millenials find companies that share this same passion as a company they would love to work for. Philanthropic companies tend to care more about their employees which in turn results in employees caring about the success of the company. It’s a win-win all the way around. So do some good in the world and help others!

Millenials are generally more coddled than generations past and have been celebrated in every stage of their life. So understanding how to celebrate the tasks completed and appreciating what they do, can result in a happy employee. Be attentive, engaged, and empower your team of Millenials.
