A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

As we pause today and remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr we are reminded of his character and actions as a thought leader of a movement. Dr. Martin Luther King embodied the traits of a charismatic, transformational leader. His passion to see change in racial divides and segregation was felt by all individuals that were a part of and inspired by the Civil Rights Movement. He had a vision of what he believed the country could be and set into motion the required acts to meet that vision. Dr. King recognized that he could not do this alone; therefore via his speeches and his actions he inspired many people across genders, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds to champion his vision of change. So what traits did he possess to do this? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was the epitome of a transformational leader.

A transformational leader follows a style of leadership that results in affirmative changes in the followers. The transformational leader is often described as charismatic, passionate, having a clear vision, and the ability to recharge his or her followers by use of words or actions. These attributes clearly define Dr. Martin Luther King.

His charisma and passion for change was what fueled the people. It made them believe that it was possible for the change they desired to come forth and be seen. He outlined his passion and vision for the future in his “I have a Dream” speech. By the tone in his voice, the life in the words, Dr. King inspired those that were following him to push to make his vision a reality. They were inspired to move to action and see the change he believed in.

So what does this mean for you as a leader?

It is the beginning of the year and we are all laying the foundation of the goals we hope to achieve this year. In order to see those into fruition we must inspire those around us to also believe in them. Taking a page from Dr. King’s book, I would urge you to utilize some of those traits of a transformational leader and use your charisma and personality to vocalize your passion and dream thus inspiring your team to action. Your excitement about achieving the company’s goals can be contagious and may be what is needed to see the change you want. People are drawn to energy, so allow your passion to speak volumes and pull them in and launch the movement.

Your passion for your dream is what will fuel the movement.
